With fuel prices going through the roof, it's driving the cost of everything up. This forces most of us to start penny pinching. I would like members to post any money saving ideas, which maybe we could all benefit from. I know that this month coming up, I'm going to get my TV cable disconnnected, at an annual savings of over six hundred dollars. Below are a few of my ideas
Disconnect TV cable
Start a small garden
LED lighting for my entire house ( I stiil have to check into this)
Buying in bulk
Instead of using toxic cleaning chemicals that make fumes I use baking soda. It works great on bathroom surfaces and really makes things white. I also use it for a deodorant and to whiten my teeth I brush with it frequently. So with one cheap box of baking soda I save a year's worth of cleaning supplies, deodorant and teeth whitening products. Also it really calms an upset stomach. Just add some to a glass of water and drink it.
I've also gotten rid of my TV, I figured I could do better things with my time and my living room in the states looks great with plants on the entertainment center instead of a big ugly tv. Microwave is also gone, therefore I cut down on my electic bill and also got healthier.
Instead of buying expensive body lotions and sunscreens I use coconut oil, grapeseed oil and Vitamin E oil. No added chemicals or fragrances, just good healthy products. Sometimes it's cheaper to be healthy!
I could go on...I think just living simply is such a reward in so many ways, and one of them is that it's cheaper.
Ya know, I've refused to have cable for several years now... it's just not worth it to me... although, I recently bought a satillite dish and receiver for FTA (Free to Air). You buy the equipment for around $200 - $300, depending on what you want, and you never get a monthly bill. They say you'll get about 300 channels, most that you'll never wanna watch, but I think it'll be worth it to me. We only get 3 channels in this area without cable, so even if I only get another 10 channels that I'd like to watch, with no monthly bill, it'll be well worth it. I haven't hooked it up yet, so we'll see.
NOOOOO ..not the computer ..LOL ..! I do my banking and other business online ..so the computer stays. Plus ..the internet is an information superhighway. I'm always searching for info on something or other.
My dad used to make me use baking soda instead of buying me real deoderant. I have alot of dad issues but this one stands out. The stuff used to hurt my armpits so i wouldn't use it. I would go to school and start sweating during P.E. class. Kids would make fun of me for smelling. I would beat their asses and get sent home and then get beat up again by my dad for getting kicked out of school. While i'm at home supspended from school he's got me reading the bible and pulling weeds all day. All for something that he could have prevented but not being a cheap basterd and buying me some real deoderant. I learned early on that if you come to school one time not smelling good most ladies will remember it forever. It happended. I haven't spoke to him for 7 years. As it stands right now if i'm asked to speak at his funeral i'm going to bad mouth him the whole time. Thats not the only reason we don't talk but that ordeal like it was yesterday. If you want to do the whole bakingsoda deoderant thing. Fine. But pleeeeaaaassss don't make your kids do it. Real deoderant is only $3 average. Funny thing is that my sisters name is megan. I used to spell her name backwards and call her Nagem.
It WORKS! I used to have the same problem as you. I refused to buy deodorants with aluminum but the natural ones just didn't work. I just rub the powder under my arms and it works great all day long. I'm a waitress and it's the best odor eliminator I've found.
I'll drive my '74 Bug and think ahead to plan my trips, combining errands to save gas.
Also, grow your own herbs/spices instead of buying them. Fresh is soooo much better and they're easy to grow. You can buy a small plant and put it in the ground and it'll keep you in fresh herbs more than you can imagine. Most grow quickly and spread. Before you know it, You'll be dividing your herb plants and give lots away to friends and family. I just divided some chives and oregano today and got my neighbor started growing herbs too.
Yes we got rid of our Microwave dont even miss it!! I am working on my garden again this year. It tends to be the "joke" in our house b/c the squirrels are well fed but I will keep trying!! I use at home cleaners with baking soda, vinegar, essential oils, dr bronners soap.
Giving up dairy and most meats help slash the bills too! We gave up red meat for the most part and only eat chicken once a week and the rest of the time eat fish! Has cut our bills way down! We are thinking about taking more advantage of public transportation and my husband may start carpooling with others from his job! Those are just a few ideas!
Not only is it expensive but I feel BETTER not eating as much meat as I was! Not totally ready to give it totally up but have cut WAY back. I could eat fish daily and LOVE, LOVE, LOVE salmon! I like them as steaks too! yumy!
