"Vegetarianism has recently acheived political correctness, and nutritionists advocating a restriction or complete elimination of animal products garner good reviews in the popular press. Their influence is reflected in the new Food Pyramid with its emphasis on grains: but the scientific evidence , honestly evaluated, argues against relying too heavily on grains and legumes as sources of protein or for severely reducing animal products in the diet.

Our primitive ancestors subsisted on a diet composed largely of meat and fat, augmented with vegetable, fruit, seeds, and nuts. Studies of their remains reveal that they had excellent bone structure, heavy musculature and flawless teeth. Agricultural man added milk, grains and legumes to this diet. These foods allowed him to pursue a more comfortable lifestyle than the hunter-gatherer, but at a price. In his studies of isolated primitive peoples, Dr. Weston Price found that those whose diet consisted largely of grains and legumes, while far healthier than civilized moderns, had, nevertheless more caries than those living primarily on meat and fish. Skulls of prehistoric peoples subsisted almost entirely on vegetable foods have teeth containing caries and abscesses and show evidence of bone problems as well.

Vegetarians often claim that animal products shorten life span, but the most cursory look at long-lived ethnic groups proves that this is not the case. Russians from the Caucasus Mountains, an area famous for longevity eat lots of fatty meat and whole milk products. Studies of Soviet Georgian populations show that those who have the most meat and fat in their diets live the longest. Inhabitants of Vilcabamba in Ecuador, known for their longevity, consume a variety of animal foods including whole milk and fatty pork. On the other hand, the vegetarian inhabitants of southern India have one of the shortestr life spans in the world.

Not only is it difficult to obtain adequate protein on a diet devoid of animal products, but such a diet leads to deficiencies in many important minerals as well. This is because a largely vegetarian diet lacks the fat-soluble catalysts needed for mineral absorption.

*Zinc, iron, calcium and other minerals from animal sources are more easily and readily absorbed.

*Man's best source of zinc is animal products.

*Usable vitamin B12 occurs only in animal products.
Vitamin B12 deficiency has been found in breast-fed infants of strict vegetarians.
Fermented soy food and spirulina contain compounds that resemble B12 but these forms are not absorbed by humans because they are not picked up by the "intrinsic factor", a specialized protein secreted in the stomach that allows B12 to be assimilated. In fact, the plant forms may even create B12 deficiencies.

Vegetarian diets also tend to be deficient in phosphorus as meat is the principle source of phosphorus for most people. This is another reason that vegetarianism has been linked to tooth decay.

A few highly publicized studies have claimed a link between consumption of red meat and saturated fats with cancer, especially cancer of the colon. Studies claiming a correlation of animal product consumption with cancer do not stand up to careful scrutiny. In many of these studies, the data bases combined saturated fats from animal sources with hydrogenated vegetable oils, known to be carcinogenic. Furthermore, these studies did not include sugar and white flour in their surveys, even though researcher Lopez and others have shown that in so-called civilized countries high meat consumption and high sugar intake often occur together.

In summary, animal products are important sources of bodybuilding elements in the diet. Furthermore, animal fats supply vitamin A and vitamin D and animal protein is rich in minerals , vitamin B6 and vitamin B12.

Any discussion of meat-eating should include the observation that temporary abstinence from animal products has been traditionally valued as a cleansing, healing practice. This is reflected in the dietary laws of many traditions and in the practices of primitive peoples who engage in periods of sparse eating or complete fasting, often in late winter or early spring when food is scarce. This wisdom is justified by the fact that meatless diets prove beneficial in the treatment of cancer and other disease such as arthritis, kidney problems and gout. But the problems arise when the practice is continued too long. These include caries, bone loss, nervous disorders, and reproductive ailments. Strict vegetarianism is particularly dangerous for growing children and for women--and men--during their child-producing years. "

I don't think a valid argument can be made from either side (meat eaters non meat eaters)
Here is why
In our daily lives we are bombarded with so many chemicals and pollutants in the air that its almost impossible to determine what is actually causing disease and death.
I would agree that a mcdonalds burger is way worse for you than organic vegetables because of the extra chemicals added to it. However, in a chemical and pollutant free environment a burger made from a freshly killed cow isnt going to be all that bad.
But even in this post I create an argument that cannot be backed up. No study can be done on anyone living on this planet that isnt skewed by airborne pollutants and chemicals.
Im rambling a bit but I think you can understand what im trying to say.

This argument is very much like an argument on religion. No way to prove a right or wrong.

I thought we were in trouble for debating so heavily, lol!
True, diet is only one aspect of health. I think environmental pollutants and chemicals are a reason why someone may eat perfectly and do all the right things and still die of cancer or stroke or heart attack...

We can probably all find reports and studies to defend either viewpoint. Information tends to get biased, or misinterpreted.
For example, this line from your link:
"Meat products contain on average more phosphorus than calcium, as opposed to vegetable food. A raised dietary phosphorus/calcium ratio leads to secondary hyperparathyroidism."
As it indicates, we need a balance! Eating more calcium-rich produce along with meat gives you that. It's not either/or, eat both!

To eat meat, for me, is not a spiritual choice. I am no less Christian or no more evil for eating it. That is a very personal opinion, stereotype if you will, some people seem to have.

Truth, obviously, is in the eyes of the beholder.

I don't ridicule or have "sympathy" on vegetarians and act as if they are ruining their bodies without meat. The same consideration should be given.

Again, I think a meat-eating diet is unhealthy when lacking vegetables and fruits. A veg one is unhealthy when lacking protein and fat, even if from veg sources.

Thanks Holly, this sums up this discussion very well!!!

Vegetarians are right about meat - NON-GRASS-FED, INHUMANELY RAISED MEAT!

A must-read: http://www.lindaprout.com/articles/Grassfed_meat.php

I like how she sums it up. I should change the title of this post to "Why humans are meant to eat grass-fed meat" and then most sensible people will agree.

The whole commercial meat industry (farming corporations) should be disbanded.

Animals should be treated the way the creator intended. Animals that are treated and fed correctly are much better for us.

Everyone, before blindly accepting dogmatic beliefs as truth, please do some research for yourselves from proponents of BOTH sides of any issue. Studies can be misinterpreted, media can be biased and plain incorrect, teachers may be narrowminded. We must think for ourselves. If we just blindly believe those who have been taught and teach that meat is the devil we may miss out on God's blessings for us.

If you are truly interested in reading about some of the myths and truths about meat, here's a good link from the Weston A. Price Foundation: http://www.westonaprice.org/mythstruths/mtbeef.html

They have no hidden agenda, are not in cahoots with the beef industry, just researchers, educators and activists.

Wonderful words !!!
I just watched KING CORN last night . It's a documentary about 2 guys growing a acre of corn in Iowa to see where it ends up. I would say GREED it the root of most health problems people face today. One segment in the film focused on how cows are fed. They are in feed lots to their bellies in dung, not moving getting obese, shots of antibotics to help with problems developed by being fed a 90 % GMO diet of corn. People want affordable food. This is one way the farmers provide it,all goverment funded of course. so really we can make choices. I choose not to consume that meat, but instead pay more for local gress fed meat grain finished on organic corn for a few weeks before slaughter. The film stated 1 burger from the feed lot cows had 6 % fat compared to grass fed which has less than 1 %. and the type of fat is very bad for you in feed lot cows. Grass fed cows fat acually has no adverse effects. so as the blog stated above, please educate yourselves. Don't be blindly led. Read, read, read. and when you make your choices, understand others may not agree with you or make the same choice. It dosen't make them better or worse. It just makes them different. They may have better or worse health. We live in our own bodies, and either benifit or suffer depending on what we put in to it.

We don't have t.v rare in this day and age hu???? We do have net flicks a order on line or via mail video service. We ordered it on line the" see it now" and watched it on our flat screen computer. I really liked it. It talked about chemicals used in growing the corn, soda, diabeties and corn suyrp. They went to a store and had a hard time finding any product NOT containing corn and or corn suyrp. GMO modified of course.

The who thing started from a hair sample from each of the guys showing massive amounts of corn. It really showed how "broken" our system is reguarding the quality of our food. Most people arn't concerned with "quality" they want "quanity" and it shows in the huge problem with obesity ! the film also addresses this. I hope you watch it. tell me what you think.

Hey Bobby
My husband John and i are the same way as you. If you want to know, ask me,just be prepared for my honest answer. I will always try and say it as kindly as possible but non the less truthfull. John always says to me and others be prepared to hear the truth when you ask me something. I admire that quality in people, honesty that is. I don't like when someone has a high opinion of themselves and thinks they are always right. Having a conversation with someone like that tends to make the other "wrong" and i see early on in a person if i want to continue to converse with them or not. More people should be honest, but sadly most can't even be honest with others because they don't even know how to look in the mirror and be honest with themselves.

Oh ya and Bobby...opinions are never wrong.

well stated. A debate isn't about making someone wrong,it's sharing a viewpoint, study or opinion. what is absolute truth ? it might not be to me what it is to someone else. The same thing can be looked at by different people and all see things differently. It dosen't make them wrong.
