My husband and I have put in a bid on a house (very long complicated story on that one...to make it short...not wanting this house is not an option)...
The house has spring water. The people are worried we might back out of the deal if we find that there is bacteria in the water. They apparently have not had this water tested for q very long time. The realtor is saying we should get it tested and be ready to do a blue light and carbon filtration.....my husband and I are clueless. I know spring water is better than public water....and I think (I think) the bacteria are probably less harmful than chemicals..... still I don't know what bacteria might still be harmful and what to do if that bacteria is there... and I don't know what a blue light or carbon filtration is. I plan on doing some research but I thought all of you might have some quick answers for me or at least could refer me where to look for quick easy answers as time is truly of the essence here. Our finances are depleted until we sell the house we are in, so though I know some of you may recommend the reverse osmosis, I am understanding that to be high cost, so it can not be an option at this time..if I'm wrong and it's not high cost..okay..but if it's more than say, digging a well, forget it.... we really have to save as much money as we can here.... thank you!!!!

If you worry about bacteria I think you should boil the water. Then let it cool for a drink.

Okay, I'm appreciating your comments...now I have looked up reverse osmosis...and I'm thinking, if I understanding correctly, that I can get a whole house osmosis system for about $3,000....is this right? We could possibly swing this in a couple of months...I was thinking it would be more... if this amount is correct, then I'm wondering what units are known to be best at this price range.... so much to consider! Who ever knew water could be so complicated...I know this is not what our Lord intended!

Carol -- can you not make it part of your offer to include either them installing a whole house water system or give you credit for the cost of one? That way you don't have to come up with the cash. If they're eager to sell they may just accept these conditions.

Great idea, only we are already getting a HUGE deal on this house....they originally were at 239,000 and we are getting them down to 205,000 with a lot of extras thrown in....appliances, TV, right of way on someone else's property, etc.... it would truly be too much to ask...good idea though

You may want to consider a drinking water sink filtration system ($500 or less) and a good shower filter ($100). Aquasana makes a good shower filter. I'm not sure who makes the best point of use drinking water filter, I have a Kenmore one from Sears, but I'm sure there are better ones on the market. Anybody have any recommendations?
