fungus? on fingernails

A few years ago my wife went to get a manicure. Afterwards when she removed the paint, her two thumb nails had grooves, and are a bit discolored.
The only thing I can think of is a fungus. Before the manicure, her nails had no problem. After the manicure, she noticed this.
Anyone hav ideas.
