Common Cold treatment using Lemon

Lemon is the most important among the many home remedies for common cold. It is beneficial in all types of cold with fever. Vitamin C-rich lemon juice increases body resistance, decreases toxicity and reduces the duration of the illness. One lemon should be diluted in a glass of warm water, and a teaspoon of honey should be added to it. This should be taken once or twice daily.
Common Cold treatment using Garlic

Garlic soup is an old remedy to reduce the severity of a cold, and should be taken once daily. The soup can be prepared by boiling three or four cloves of chopped garlic in a cup of water. Garlic contains antiseptic and antispasmodic properties, besides several other medicinal virtues. The oil contained in this vegetable helps to open up the respiratory passages. In soup form, it flushes out all toxins from the system and thus helps bring down fever. Five drops of garlic oil combined with a teaspoon of onion juice, and diluted in a cup of water, should be drunk two to three times a day. This has also been found to be very effective in the treatment of common cold.
Common Cold treatment using Ginger

Ginger is another excellent remedy for colds and coughs. About ten grams of ginger should be cut into small pieces and boiled in a cup of water. It should then be strained and half a teaspoon of sugar added to it. This decoction should be drunk when hot. Ginger tea, prepared by adding a few pieces of ginger into boiled water before adding the tea leaves, is also an effective remedy for colds and for fevers resulting from cold. It may be taken twice daily.
Common Cold treatment using Lady's Fingers

Lady's fingers are highly valuable in treating irritation of the throat and a persistent dry cough. This vegetable is rich in mucilage and acts as a drug to allay irritation, swelling, and pain. About 100 gm of lady's fingers should be cut into pieces, and boiled down in half a litre of water to make a decoction. The steam issuing from this decoction may also be inhaled once or twice a day to relieve throat irritation and a dry cough.
Common Cold treatment using Bitter Gourd Roots

The roots of the bitter gourd plant are used in folk medicine to cure a cold. A teaspoon of the root paste, mixed with an equal quantity of honey or holy basil leaf juice, given once every night for a month, acts as an excellent medicine for colds.
Common Cold treatment using Turmeric

Turmeric is an effective remedy for colds and throat irritations. Half a teaspoon of fresh turmeric powder mixed in 30 ml of warm milk, and taken once or twice daily, is a useful prescription for these conditions. Turmeric powder should be put into a hot ladle. Milk should then be poured in it and boiled over a slow fire. This mixture should then be drunk by the patient. In case of a running cold, smoke from the burning turmeric should be inhaled. It will increase the discharge from the nose and provide quick relief.
Common Cold treatment using Tamarind and Pepper

Tamarind-pepper rasam is also considered an effective home remedy for a cold in South India. Dilute 50 mg tamarind in 250 ml of water. Boil the diluted tamarind water for a few minutes with a teaspoon of hot clarified butter and half a teaspoon of black pepper powder. This steaming hot rasam has a flushing effect, and should be taken three times a day. As one takes it, the nose and eyes water and the nasal blockage is cleared.
Common Cold treatment using Vitamin C

Regular intake of vitamin C-75 mg for adults and 35 mg for children-will prevent the common cold. If, however, a cold has already appeared, large doses of this vitamin will relieve the symptoms and shorten its duration. He estimates that one to two grams (1000 mg to 2000 mg) per day is approximately the optimum amount of this vitamin for this purpose. His advice is to swallow one or two 500mg tablets of vitamin C at the appearance of the first sign of the cold and continue the treatment by taking one to two 500 mg tablets daily.

For a year now I have been giving my family an organic liquid form of echinacia that I purchase at the local health food store. Every time one of us feels a cold coming on we take it two to three times a day for two to three days. Keeps the cold from getting worse and wipes it right out. They were sceptical at first but are all believers now as each one of us saw fantastic results every time we used it.

One question I have about it is does a capsule form work just as well? My son is a new enliste of the U.S. Coast Guard and they are soon going to be at sea for a five month mission. I want to get him a supply of echinacia and thought a capsule would be more convenient for him than the liquid as he could just stow a few in his pocket during the day. Any one know?

Carrie I'm not sure if pills are better than liquid. I posted this because I know it's the time of year for colds and other viruses. I'm sick now with a cold...going on four days. Lets just say four killer days. With body aches, chills, and sweats. I had to even miss three days of work because of it. The congestion started in my head but it's now going in my chest. I have been taking Garlic, Echinacea & Goldenseal, Vitamin C, living off of soup, lots of water, and drink herbal tea all day long with a touch of honey and lemon. There are a few people at my job sick as well but went on anti-biotics but I'm NOT doing that. I'm letting this one takes its course and just ride it out. If you swear by the organic liquid form than I would stick with that one. But maybe someone else can answer that for you......Dawn

Could be Charles....I don't know.. but I'm still real sick. I did have a slight fever last week but it broke in my sleep. Who was it that started that thread about "When Was The last Time You Had A Fever" John I think. Well, I got jinxed....LOL...now I can't stop coughing. I hope it's not turning into bronchitis. I'm such a baby when I get sick...LOL...I think because of the hell I went through on that treatment to help fight off liver diseases. For a full year...24-7 it felt just like the flu. Some bad stuff. Anyway...what is boneset tea? I never heard of that one. And where can I buy it? At a healthfood store. I'm desperate. I can't afford to call out sick from work this week. Thanks...I'll check into that tea you recommended. More research. http://homepage.mac.com/cohora/plants/boneset.html

No...not dry at all. I'm congested. But today I feel so much better and getting ready to go back to work. Aches, pains, sweats, and chills are all gone. Just still stuffed up and chest is congested. It was bound to happen. I ran myself down because this past summer wasn't going to bed until between 4-6 in the morning. Than had to be at work at 3 in the afternoon. On my days off I never relaxed. Just constant go-go. Yesterday I finally got out and got some fresh air after being in the house for a week. That seemed to help but woke up with a bad cough. So my next question...what's good to break up the mucous? I also want to try that Apple Fast. Think it's too soon and should I wait until I fully recover from this cold?.......Dawn

Thanks Ezmee....I'll try to drink more water. I have been drinking alot of herbal tea since I got sick. I tried one that has Peppermint today....4 cups to be exact and seems to have helped some. When I get home tonight after work I'm going to look up the benefits from Peppermint since it seems to be helping with my cough. I posted the Apple Fast on Kelly's page under her blog. If you're interested go there and read and let me know what you think. She hasn't gotten back to me because I'm sure she's really busy these days. I'll post the direct link to her blog. It sounds reasonable and easy. Maybe right now would be a good time to start the fast since my appetite has decreased tremendously since I got sick.....Dawn

I prefer the liquid form. I read report that in capsule form it might flush right thru the body unless your stomach has enough acid to melt the capsule.

Yeah I always felt liquid would probably be a better choice. Easier to digest...Dawn

Again no reply button under Ezmee now. Yeah that fast is a tad different. The other one you just eat apples but Kelly mentioned you need to do enemas at the end of the day. Oh-Oh...LOL...the one you posted doesn't sound like you need to. I'm sure the combo between apple juice and prune juice will definitely give you bowel movements without any problem. God...there are so many different Fast to chose from. Maybe I'll start my Fast this weekend. The one Kelly mentioned caught my eye so probably give that one a try. I'm sure it's safe to do while I'm sick. Shoot it may just knock out my cold once and for all.....Dawn

My grandma's home made chicken noodle soup really works good too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A mustard plaster if the cold is in your chest--followed by rubbing vicks on chest and back and forhead and bottem of feet--put socks on feet--towel on chest and back and bundle up-- a couple cups of hot brandy with some lemon and nutmeg---then sweat it out. Works every time if you do this when you first start to come down with a cold. My daughter's friend use to come stay at our house when she came down with a cold. She said her Mom did nothing for her and she loved being spoiled when she was sick.Guess the extra tender loving care helps too !!!
