Kevin mentions taking a tbsp in the morning and evening. Has anyone used coconut oil and what health benefits if any did you receive from it?
I have it in solid form.
I haven't used it in that way, but have changed over from all the other oils for cooking, and while it was "different" at first, we have grown so accustomed to it now that everything else tastes funny. It has a very high heat tolerance which makes it much more adaptable than most of the other healthy oils for frying.
You asked what if any health benefits we received? I guess I don't really know how to measure that. We are using it as part of our overall healthy lifestyle program, so I can only speculate as to what change contributed what benefit.
Coconut oil has a very low melting point (about 80 degrees or so), so if you wish to take it in liquid form, simply run the container under warm tap water for a minute or two and you will have some oil. My pantry is a bit warmer than the rest of the house, so when I keep it in there, it stays mostly liquid. I have purchased two different varieties, one that I use for cooking "non-sweet" things like eggs and meat, and the other is by the same company (Barrow?) and is more of the sweet coconut flavor. I use this in my favorite brownies and it really makes things tasty. If I was choosing which to take straight up, this would be the one I would buy, but I haven't been able to bring myself to do that.
If you want to find out more about healthy ways to use coconut oil, I saw on one of the blogs I read regularly a video on how to fry an egg. It was very interesting and she shares a great deal of information on the benefits of this oil.
I saw on GPB station a while back that a man (promoting his diet book) said it was better and healthier to use coconut oil in cooking and not to use olive oil in cooking. He went on to say that olive oil is fantastic but it's properties change when heated at a certain temperature and that it is best used in salads. So I learned something there.
I'll watch the video. I did make an omelet with the coconut oil. This didn't add flavor to the omelet so I am guessing it is not the sweet variety you mentioned. I did notice that it melted quickly and sauteed the vegetables much better than the olive oil.
I just purchased some coconut oil almost a week ago. I haven't got around to trying yet. I bought it for my feet and my face. I will let you know how it turns out in a week or two when I see results.
I went through a jar of it--it is not that bad. I just took a spoon full and you can let it melt in your mouth--it really does not have a greasy taste to it at all. Or you melt it and put it in with something else. I put on weight instead of loosing it so stopped taking it. I was taking it cuz he said in his book that you would loose weight while doing this. To see the health benefits of it all you have to do is type in coconut oil in the search and you will find all kinds of things about it. I just use it for cooking now.
It's a helluva lot better than using chalp stick for your lips.
+ It suppresses hunger.
After taking a tablespoon in the morning, I never feel hungry by the time my football practice starts.
and w/o it I usually feel hungry during practice.
i got to tell ya i ve been using coconut oil for cooking and body use,its wonderful, ive been using it for a year now,and i got to admit in the last year ive lost 80 pounds,so go figure!!
I did it for quiet sometime and noticed the difference. I must admit I got tired of chugging the stuff down, so I then started adding it to my smoothes. I use it on and off now. But always tend to keep some in my house.
I am off and on with taking a teaspoon internally, but I use this for myself and my toddler in the bath. I only use this to shave my legs with and it leaves you with the right amount of moisture for the skin and I also use this through the winter for dry skin, always in the bath or shower and then I gently rinse it off. I highly recommend it for the skin!
After reading Kevin's book and recommending my mom to take the coconut oil, she was able to get off her thyroid medication. So one of the greatest health benefit is for thyroid support.
Now this I am shocked. I take thyroid medication. Did your Mom have a mild case of thyroid disease?
I would be thrilled if that happened and my Doctor said I could get off!!:)
I'm not sure if it was considered a mild case. Her doctor prescribed synthroid and told her to take it forever. But after taking the coconut oil for about 6 months, her doctor took her off of the meds.
