Ok, my son will be turning two years old on December 15,th. Everyone around me is telling me we should start taking DS to see a dentists soon to have his teeth cleaned, etc. We have not taken him yet and im not sure how I feel about dentist. As good and as necessary as they are im not too happy with getting xrays, etc. Im not too concerned if it's just for a cleaning! I go twice a year to get my teeth cleaned but I skip the xrays, etc. Do you ladies think it would be safe just to have his teeth cleaned, etc? Are there any concerns or headsup I should be aware of?

Marilyn,

Thank you! You ROCK! The only downside is our insurance will not cover a holistic dentist at all. Hope that changes soon...they don't offer any coverage for alternative medicine. I will see what I can find out! I did find a holistic doctor in my area that Im going to take DS to in February! Then im going to take myself and make my husband go also.

Marilyn,

No, im not opting for poisoned insurance....but it does make it very difficult to try and explain to my husband why we can't use what is offered with our insurance! When they clean the teeth....is that flouride? That was one of my big questions whether they actually use flouride just in a teeth cleaning! I will see if I can find a holistic dentists and only take him to get a check up and take him if I think there is a problem with his teeth. So, they really do laugh at us? That's awful!

My dentist said my 2yr doesn't have to come in until she's about 3 or 31/2 and is able to understand and sit for an exam. Otherwise it would just be a screamfest. I too have to find a holistic dentist, don't think my insurance covers it either. I have to replace 2 silver fillings and my dentist keeps wanting to do them but seems like no special precautions are needed, especially while I'm still nursing, which worries me. For x-rays, I did get 2 done last visit. Is it really unnecessary and/or dangerous? I didn't feel good about it because of the radiation, now I'm more curious since you mentioned it.

naturenut,

The problem with xrays is over time radiation and radium are built up in the body! This was a big concern of mine. When I go to the dentists, I tell them no xrays and no flouride but it would be even better to find a holistic dentists. I just think the xrays are unnecessary unless there is a major problem.

Cayce, I have a holistic dentist and they still take exrays but it is a low radiation kind. My dentist has Kevins books in his waiting room. I thought that was pretty cool.... I'm lucky to have found him.

Christine, please let us know who/ where your dentist is!

Cayce. I was always told to wait until the child is about 3 or 4. As long as you clean his teeth yourself and he doesnt get sugary juices his teeth should be fine. Whatever you do dont let them put flouride on them. I would always tell my pediadontist "no flouride" and boy would I get funny looks. I didnt know there was such a thing as holistic dentistry when my kids were little, so you are lucky and so is DS. Luckily none of my children have ever had cavities though and this is without ever getting flouride or drinking flouridated water.

Christine,

Im so glad I have decided not to give him juice until he is older. He will be two on December 15,th. I do think it's a little too soon to take him to a dentists but maybe they can just look in his mouth and tell if anything is wrong. No flouride for us!

I read an article on the HPAKids website about cavities in young children being due to a bacterium not "bottle-mouth" and such. Here's a link:

good article. I beleive it comes from within. Nutrition. The book nutrition and degenerative disease by Weston Price reports on this subject. If you have good nutrition you body will take care of EVERYTHING. I just had a holistic dental appt. for a cavity tha I have had for a couple of years. When they drilled it the dentist was amazed that my body had formed a block around the cavity so it didnt get to the pulp. He said must be from my nutritional balance. I think it may be from the glyconutrients that I have taken for the last year. Other people taking them have reported dental caries improving. Interesting!

Christine,

Wow, that's great! Sounds like you are doing something right. I haven't had any cavities since I was a young child thank goodness and I think my change in lifestyle has had a lot to do with that. That is interesting!

naturenut,

Oh, good article! Thanks for sharing that! I believe it has more to do with bacteria also!
