Anyone else dealing with an intense addiction to chocolate? I read somewhere it may be a deficiency in magnesium or something else leading to chocolate cravings. It's not a sugar craving per se since I pass up sugar candies. It has to be Chocolate! I joke about it, but seriously, it's a real addiction. It's better when I eat healthier but I fall off the wagon with one bite or sniff ;) Any C.A. members? Advice?
There's nothing wrong with indulging in a little chocolate once in a while. The holidays really do add to the problem of over indulging. I had a dreaded chocolate addiction before I started dieting last december when I found the suggestions in Kevins first two books about using coconut oil in place of fats for cooking. Within 2 or 3 days of using the coconut oil, my chocolate addiction stopped. Today, a year later, I still enjoy chocolate when I want it, not because I need or have to have it. I used to wolf down an entire large hershey bar or my favorite a Cadbury's fruit and nut or almond bar. And usually one wouldnt do it, I would wolf down 2 or 3 just as easily. The coconut oil stopped all of that and now I can buy a hershey bar or Cadbury bar and be content with just one or two squares, not the whole bar. If you havent tried using coconut oil in place of margarine, butter, crisco type grease, or wesson oil, give it a try. You'll be surprised how your chocolate addiction melts away, pun intended.
try getting the Organic 70% cocoa DARK choc bars at the health food store. there is less sugar and more REAL chocolate. More satisfying with less calories, you will only want to eat a little bit. And it is full of antioxidants! I agree with the coconut oil also.

Hi Christine. I agree about the dark chocolate. If you dont want to give up chocolate totally, a little of the darker is good. I havent tried the coconut oil, but it sounds like a good idea also.

I do use coconut oil once in a while but never thought of it for controlling chocolate cravings. It's a bit expensive and I ran out. I'll have to get some more. Yes, if I were able to settle for a square or two, no problem now and then. I'm almost done with a 1lb block of semisweet (60% cocoa) I got at Whole Foods Tuesday to make hot cocoa and haven't even made the cocoa, eek. I hide it from DH and kids too, like a fiend :o A nibble turns into a whole block! OK, maybe I have self-control issues!?
If you go to the website www.vitacost.com they sell a large jar of Nutiva Coconut Oil in a 52 ounce size for about 25 dollars. I find that one jar lasts me about 2 months if I cook with it every day. I use it to fry fish in, I even spread it on my toast in place of butter or margarine. Get serious with the coconut oil in your cooking and the chocolate addiction will vanish. I too used to eat 1 pound blocks of hersheys and 2 or 3 of the Cadbury bars so I know what you're going through.
I LOVE chocolate but try to opt for Dark Organic varieties! I like the organic Dagoba chocolate bars and they are recommended by Dr. Mercola. I don't see any problems with eating good quality, healthy chocolate from time to time if you are pretty healthy. Anyone with candida issues, etc should put off alot of sweets consumption until there candida is under control . I became a severe chocoholic during my travels to Europe! Can anyone say BELGIAN CHOCOLATE? LOL! YUMMY!
Get on the inliven and you can eat more. It helps your digestion! and that in turn helps your metabolism and every other system in you body. The "gut Brain".
Actually, check out my blog, I think I got to the bottom of it using EFT! For me, it seems there was a deep rooted emotional cause behind the intense craving. So far I'm on day 2 of non-addiction, so far so good!
