I have three dogs and they all have various problems that I believe is linked to the food that they eat. Does anyone have any relevant information that they may like to share?

Hi, I have a wonderful short haired miniature dachshund who is 10 month old and full of personality, will send pics later. Do you know if these dogs tend to get allergies. He acts like he may have like hay fever...sneezing and wheezing for awhile after being outside. Can you suggest what to give him for this? He sounds so miserable at times and having allergies myself I know how he feels.

Thanks for any help you can suggest.

God bless,
Tanya

PS, I am so glad to have met you and found this site!

Tanya, when you take him outside is he in a yard of grass, an open field, on the sidewalk, in the street, etc.?

If he's in a grassy common area or yard, then he might be exposed to toxins contained in fertilizer or even the water used on the grass itself. Most suburban communities with grassy common areas (and dog parks) use reclaimed water to irrigate. You may even see signs posted to this effect, stating that the water is unfit to imbibe (drink).

Do you live near any industrial plants, power lines, heavy traffic areas, etc.?

Is he more active outside than he is inside? If so, the extra physical activity may possibly be stimulating a histamine or mucosal reaction in his respiratory tract.

What kind of food are you feeding him? Do you give him filtered water, or tap?

You can check out Dachworld too.

In fact, I recommend that ANY pet owner (dog/cat/bird/etc.) find online resources/communities specific to their breed and become active in any forums/meetup groups that are available.

food is a hot topic for dogs, which evolved by hunting and scavenging from humans, and never learned to cook! the all-raw diet is interesting but not feasible or convenient, i found. i supplement my dog's dry/wet food with raw meaty bones. best if i can find ones that are not from animals raised conventionally with hormones, artificial feed, etc. some pet stores have them. the raw bones are good for their teeth and exercise the whole body. watch how they get into it, moving all over to get with the bone.

main ingredient on the bought food should be protein, and there should be essential fatty acids for skin and fur, as well as veggies. try for organic. i have used both innova high protein-low carb formula, and now avoderm, specially formulated for skin. i add some organic canned food to make it more interesting for her.

more and more i hear about dogs getting cancer. i have to think they are suffering from the same environmental polllution that we are, with toxins in the food chain. i pay more to buy quality food for my standard poodle, stella. (she doesn't have the kooky haircut.)

there is good info about flea control, coat care, etc. on the natural cures website.

We have our two border collies on Innova. Our youngest, is only 4 months, and he loves raw veggies so we mix those in as much as possible. We had our older one on Science Diet his whole life and he had major skin issues, since we switched we have had no problems at all.
