I've been using a Melatonin (night time) Herbal Tea for years, and it really works. It has a natural orange spice flavor added, and I buy it thru Puritans Pride, online vitamin company. www.puritan.com I would be greatly disappointed if it was ever discontinued. I also use natures valium, callled Valerian Root, on those really tough nites. Give them a try, you should be pleasantly suprised.
Melatonin never worked for me...scary to think thats the only alternative...or is it??? I here taking Valerian root for an extended time causes depression and kava kava can be toxic and NEVER take GABA...just a little too much will cause SERIOUS AND PROLONGED ANXIETY. JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE NATURAL DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE SAFE! I have personally discovered that exhausing yourself during the day with daily chores and vigerous exercise and then eating an early healthy dinner and then a hot shower, maybe some hot sex... that usually does it for me.
Please, don't ever take valerian if you Have to Take Any Prescription Atypical Anti-psychotics: This applies to everything in the atypical, anti-psychotic, also called, second generation, anti-psychotics! This category of drugs include: Zyprexa, Seroquel, Respiridal, Abilify, and Lamictal. You also should not take valerian if you take Topamax, Depakote, Tegretol, Ativan, or Stelazine. Also, some of the prescription ant-depressant pills do not mix well with valerian. When you take prescription psychiatric drugs, I must emphasize: You must Ask your Doctor, and Pharmacist, about possible Adverse Reactions between all of Your Prescription Drugs, and all of your Herbal Supplements! Ask before adding that herbal remedy or herbal teas/tisanes to your medicine routine, and you'll end up much happier, and healthier, and safer in the long, and short terms! For instance, if you're a bipolar person, and take valerian, and any second generation anti-psychotic, you could probably make yourself sicker, for the rest of your life; doing this, taking valerian, and second generation antipsychotics, has a huge statistical probability of turning you into a fast-cycling, bipolar person, if you are already a bipolar person! Since I'm certain that no one with this difficult disease would want to ever start going through this emotional series of ups and downs even faster than they already are, please, please, do not ever mix psychiatric drugs and herbal remedies without first consulting your physicians, dentists, and your pharmacists! God Bless You All.
Never buy your supplements from a walmart! You need to buy them at a healthfood store to ensure your getting a "quality" product with no additives and fillers...

SITO:
Good topic, and one that is a big item in health concerns these days.
Put simply, we can't sleep because we're still in "fight or flight" mode from the day's activities. In other words, the adrenal glands are still active at a time when they should be less active. The obvious "cure" is rechanelling stress through light exercise (such as brisk walks), and rebalancing the hormones through proper nutrition and cleanses.
No doubt, there are "sleep aids" you can purchase, but it won't resolve the problem that the adrenals are kicking up a fuss. Like the aspirin for a headache, a sleep aid only manages a symptom. It simply won't "cure" overworked and tired adrenals.
What you're looking for is a gradual lifestyle change so that you have a permanent resolution. Then you'll sleep like a baby on mom's teet.
Been there, done that, own the t-shirt patent. Now I don't see sunrise unless I wake to it.
I've used melatonin with good success but be careful! You can take it too long and it can cause side effects. It is a hormone so be careful. It started making me feel more sluggish and tired even though I was sleeping. I feel it built up in my body so I feel it should only be used short term until your body clock is reset and in a better habit of sleep. Over all though it's better than taking a drug!
