So, less than a 100 yrs ago, the average lifespan of a person was 47. Back then, the plethora of chemicals in today's foods, water and environment were not in existence. Neither were the mega-doses of pharmaceuticals. Most people had their own gardens that they depended on for food. I understand that we are living longer but our quality of life is diminishing as we age. I can't seem to understand why 100 yrs. ago people only lived that long, given a simple, toxin-free life ...... and then why we are living longer??

Umm. Indians, childbirth, infection, diseases, don't know. Good question.

I think it's because back then they didn't realize how important it was to protect their cells from common diseases by consuming foods rich in antioxidants. Omega fatty acids (3, 6, 9) were not discovered either. They ate alot of beef and pork (which is fine) but the normal diet was meat and potatoes......NOW people understand the importance of a balanced diet and eating 7 to 9 servings of fruits and veggies to obtain the necessary antioxidants and phytonutrients to live healthier and longer.....

Back then people worked themselves to death.. Literally.. Life was MUCH harder than it was today... They didn't just do a good cardio workout.. (smile)... They worked themselves into an early grave..

That's true. They worked themselves to death. But keep in mind that hard work causes "oxidative stress" on the body. They never knew any of that. So if oxidative stress causes problems, the answer is antioxidants, and that falls into the comment I made earlier. In fact, even regular exercise causes oxidative stress, so no matter what anyone's lifestyle may be, these nutrients are necessary to keep in your body 24 hours a day, in order to protect healthy functioning cells and prevent diseases which are so common in our society.
All of this was not common knowledge "back in the day". But today, so many more people know what they should do.....Those who are needlessly getting sick and dying STILL don't realize that they have a choice of getting sick or not. Either they don't realize it, or don't believe it, or they just don't give a damn....Who knows?

Another thing is they ate a lot of corn...
When Native Americans started growing and consuming corn they contracted a lot more health problems..
Corn is not a vegetable -- its a grain...
With what we now know about corn it makes a lot of sense..

I agree, I don't think their diets were as healthy as we assume. Like Linda and Bobby said, lots of meat, potatoes and corn. They ate what they could get.
I also know many woman died in childbirth and they had a lot of children close together, which was/is very hard on your body.
Very little access to "good" medical care. If you got an infection from a wound, you just survived it, or you didn't.
Lots of diseases, cholera, influenza, syphilis etc. that were virtually left untreated.
I heard of entire Indian tribes that were wiped out from the common cold virus contracted from the Europeans.
I also read, that life spans were linked to economical status as well. Maybe better access to quality food, medical care?
Another thought: Maybe we are genetically stronger now. Back then, people were coming from fairly isolated gene pools. Now we are basically becoming a "global" race, with many different ethnic gene pools mixed together.
I have to wonder if this question doesn't bring up the point of how Science and Nature if used in conjunction could help us live longer and healthier than we ever have. To bad it has to be lopsided one way or the other.

All of the above is true. Let me add this tho, and it goes back to an old saying that not enough people today take seriously. "Prevention is the best medicine"....
I practice what I preach.

I am brand new to this but correct me if I am wrong, but that is sort of the problem that I am facing. When you say that life spans were linked to economical status as well, please advice me on how to move forward without very much money.

people weren't as healthy as you think. read the jungle by upton sinclair... the way people had to live was absolutely awful.

Ive always heard it was because we didnt have running water to keep things clean and bacteria/virus free. Well, one of the reasons anyway. If they lived in the northern hemisphere, how did they bathe in the wintertime ? Ive always been curious about that. In the movies, you always see them sitting in a bathtub outside...lol Did they have a little room in their cabin for the bathtub ? Did their wells ever freeze up ? And how fun it would have been to have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night on a blizzardy night. burrrr.

I think most people in the olden days did not have enough salt in their body. I read book Rejuvnation Methods from the Ancient Mariners by Sam Biser which say a sodium is a must for everybody. Since ancient Roman time, war has been wage over salt. Sam Biser book say refine salt is bad, and sea salt is good. The book pick Celtic salt as the healthiest form of sea salt. By the way I think the book is out of print. So if you want to read the book, I think you have look at the use book store. I might write a book review when I am in the mood.
