Hi, I have a brother-in-law who has acid reflux and who takes a med. for it. I'm nervous about aproaching him about the many natural cures that there are for him. It's like talking about religion...it's taboo. Can one take natural cures while taking perscription drugs?
Hi Renee,
I am very new to all of this, although I do know my husband suffers from acid reflex, and is in horrible pain quite often. I don't know much about the natural cures yet, but I do know that he would welcome the advice, if it meant he wasn't it pain everynight and didn't have to sleep sitting up! I know that wasn't alot of help, but as a person who lives with him having to deal with this, I know any help is welcome.

Sometimes it can be as easy as a little tablespoon of raw organic apple cider vinager before bedtime. Or during the onset of syptoms. Hope this Helps, PTAMAN
I would check out the risk of interaction first. If it is something like Betaine HCL and digestive enzymes there should be no interaction, but if adding herbs there may be. I have looked on GNC website before and looked up the herb I wanted to take to see if there were and prescription meds it would interact with. There is also some sort of physicians reference of herbs and their reactions with pharmaceuticals but I'm not sure what it is called. If the only medicine he is on is one of the acid blockers it is okay to quit that cold turkey, the quicker the better. Betaine HCL 30 minutes before meals, and a good digestive enzymes product while eating will reset his own acid pumps. I have done this and it works. I have been off of Prevacid, Prilosec etc. for 5 years. If his stomach and or esophagus is burned from the acids aloe vera juice will heal it. It is also important to kill off any candida if it's possible he has it because the waste byproduct of candida is acid! If he craves sugar, and sugar makes his heartburn/reflux worse this is probably the case. Oil of oregano, capryllic acid and grapefruit extract all kill candida. And a good quality probiotic to repopulate the gut with the "good" bacteria is important too. It seems like a lot and I have found that people have to be really sick of being sick to listen and try when I tell them this. It's just easier and cheaper to take the prescription drug because it is just one pill and insurance will pay for it. They don't realize the problems it is going to lead to down the road.....Dysbiosis, food allergies, constipation, bloating......everybody wants the quick fix, magic pill! Hope this helps.
Apple Cider Vinegar! My husband has suffered from acid reflux too for who knows how long-LONG. 2 weeks ago I told him no more meds, try acv. He still gets heartburn but if he takes a drink of some before each meal, he tends not to get the h'burn. If he feels it coming on, he goes back to the acv. It does take it away. I also have him taking a probiotic. I think after eating processed foods for so long that much of the good bacteria is not there in the gut. I'm hoping that once the intestine is clean and loaded with all the proper bacteria, taking acv, that the h'burn will finally subside. For those of you looking for a good probiotic, "en-liven" has all the bacteria one needs. Talk to Michelle under the group (Healers Hearth) She has great knowledge on this.

My wife suffered from acid reflux. A friend ntroduced me to this sie and product and we have been taking it for about 2 years, and my wife no longer suffers from acid reflux or has to take harmful medicines. She only drinks 1 to 2 ounces per day. For about $1 per day average cost. It helps other ailments to. Its also listed in the medical PDR for Non-Prescription drugs and dietary supplements.
Pure Herb Ltd has an extract called Papaya mint. No fillers, pure papya. I have helped lawyers with ulcers, my child who had extreme gastro problems and many more. Can't and won't live without this stuff! But...remember....it has to be your BIL's want...not yours. ;) good luck!
