The largest group of alternative health care practitioners in the US is that of DCs. Discovered in 1895, chiropractic has helped millions of people get symptomatic relief from a myriad of aches and pains but its true purpose is to optimize a person's health and wellness by maintaining proper function of the nervous system, which runs every other system in the body.
Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs), or Chiropractors, require a 4 year undergrad degree before being accepted into an accredited 5 year DC program. DCs are licensed in all 50 states and can also provide other services like nutritional counseling, muscular rehab, and allergy arrest.
It is not an easy route to become a DC but it can be the most rewarding. There are about 14 accredited schools of chiropractic in the US. The first, and I like to think the best, is Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport IA (www.palmer.edu). A good place to start and explore is the American Chiropractic Association (www.amerchiro.org). There is a lot of info to look into.
I hope that helps.

Welcome Dr...
What do you think of NUCCA Chiropractics, and what is it.

Reply to This

NUCCA is a very specific chiropractic technique that uses specialized xrays and other approaches to adjust the the Upper Cervical region (top of the spine just below the skull) only for a variety of reasons. Just like any of the other 200 or so chiropractic techniques out there, it works well on some patients and not as good on others. All techniques have their pros and cons. This is what makes the chiropractic world go 'round.

I heard to be a NUCCA DC it takes extra schooling, is that true?

Do chiropractic doctors only deal with the bones and nerves or is there other things they work with, and do they use herbs, homeopathic remedies, etc?

As far as extra schooling is concerned, I believe that what you only need, just like any other more specific technique not taught in the core curriculum of schools, is seminar work that can be as little as 12 extra hours up to 100 extra hours depending upon the technique.

Also, some DCs do use nutritional supplements to add to their practice for several good reasons. Making sure a patient is taking in the core basic nutrients to feed the immune and other systems, is key to getting the basic building blocks for cell repair, proper tissue function, and electric gradients needed for proper nerve transmission. This can only help aid the chiropractic adjustment perform better. There are certainly great herbal remedies and natural cures that some DCs use but it is not a part of the schooling per se. Obviously, you should go to a Homeopathic Doctor for homepathic medicine for best results but I know you can buy some homeopathic remedies OTC at certain stores.
Another big part of DC practices involves taking care of the soft-tissues (muscles, ligaments, discs) because they have to keep them in balance in order to keep the bones in place for longer periods of time. IF you don't address a chronically tight muscle attaching to a certain vertebra, it will continue to pull the bone out of place (SUBLUXATION) and make the healing process take longer. Unfortunately, not all DCs address this issue with treatment and believe that just taking care of the subluxation will, in and of itself, relieve the muscular tightness.

Sorry reply is so late. Xrays are very important for several reasons. You must make sure you rule out any pathology that could, in itself, rule out the ability to make an adjustment, but to also make any adjustments as specific as possible for maximum correction. Adjusting the skull bones is more the realm of Bio-Cranial Adjustment technique and is not a standard Palmer Package technique. In and of itself, Bio-Cranial can be a very powerful adjustment because it "unscrews" the dura mater (one of the meninges) that goes all the way down the spinal cord and can potentially relieve pressure on all the nerves of the cord. Hope that helps.
