My daughter is going to get a titanium implant into her skull so she can wear the new BAHA hearing device. The titanium implant provides a path for mechanical waves to be sent from the BAHA device to the brain via bone conduction.
I was concerned about the effects titanium would have on the body and researched it just a couple days ago. Apparently, titanium is perfectly safe for the body. The body already contains small amounts of titanium even though there is no known use for titanium in the body's function.
I had titanium screws and plates in my leg when I shattered the bones a few years ago. Other than they short circuit the electric currents needed for healing the bones, they did not negatively affect the tissues or my other biological processes. Today, people are having knee caps, hips, and other body parts replaced by titanium and living a healthy life.
I feel comfortable with my daughter getting the titanium implant, since that is her choice. However, I am considering alternative forms of bone conduction hearing devices, such as the neurophone, for my hearing loss.
