Hi Yoga friends!

What's the best way to learn yoga? I read in a book once that it is best to have almost one on one instruction at first so you can learn the subtleties of the positions. But, well, I haven't done that, and isn't it rather expensive to do it that way? I mean, I guess it would be worth it, especially if you can learn it and then you don't need an instructor after awhile. But can I learn yoga from one of those Rodney Yee tapes? (I think that's his name!) I am thinking that learning and doing yoga from a tape is better than not doing it at all!

But I think some classes would be fun too. There is a Bikram yoga in my area, and also a Dahn yoga. I think the prices were pretty similar.

How did you all learn yoga?

I don't think that one on one instruction is necessary, but it would be really nice! I personally cannot afford such a thing and learned through group instruction and on my own through books and videos. I have found that group yoga classes are often small and allow some personal attention. However, this would depend on the area you live in and where you take the class. Another thing I really like are yoga decks. They can be purchased at most book stores, are relatively cheap, and offer pretty detailed instructions of the formation, breathing techniques, and beneficial sequencing of many poses. Like you said, any yoga is better than none at all, so I just take advantage of and enjoy any opportunities that come my way! Good luck and I hope this helps.

Namaste,
Sandy
