Community Cures.com

Hi! I just joined Natural Cures the other day to see what it was about and to get the recipe for the Hunza bread. Has anyone made a batch? I had no idea where to post my experience so, if this isn't the right place - let me know.

I'm not what one would call a "cook". I'm just a mom that can usually follow instructions and produce something decent to feed the kids. They're growing on a daily basis so I must be doing something right. But I do believe I have met my match...

I thought, how hard can it be to make the recipe outlined on this site for the Hanza bread? A few ingredients, stir, bake and... tada!!!! Bread!
I made a trip to the store and found the ingredients needed. I went to the health food store as I wasn't sure if my local Albertsons would have everything I needed and if it would be organic and natural.

$59 bucks later (Thats where one of the *thud*'s come in to play) and I'm out the door thinking "This had better be one heckuva loaf of bread for this price!". When I got home, I didn't feel as bad about the price I paid 'cause I remembered I also bought coffee and some xylitol. So my "loaf" of bread is only costing me maybe $40.

My 8yr old son volunteered to help me mix the ingredients. We got the biggest bowl we had and dumped in the flour. I hadn't really stopped to think just how much flour was in 8 cups. My son thought it was neat because it was so fine and soft. Try it! It makes dandy hand indentations! But I digress.... We spooned in the honey and the molasses. T'wasn't easy but we did it. Spices here and there, oil.... and.... Hmmmm.... My son asks how we're going to stir it. I have no idea. It looks pretty thick. DOH! The water! We weren't sure we'd have room in that bowl but we put it in and gave it a few stirs with my big wooden spoon. We looked at each other and knew that just wasn't going to do.

"Mom! The hand mixer!". Yeah, son! Sounds good! I get out my handy dandy hand mixer that has seen me through 30 years of uninterrupted service. Put the beaters in, stuck it in the mix and let it rip.
*Whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrr... rrrrrrrrr......rrrrrrrr. rrrrrrrr...rrr..r..*
Did you know those things spark up when they burn out their lil motors?
My son and I looked at each other like "Well? What now?" So I go to lift the mixer and blades out of the concoction. Mixer comes, blades remain. My son was in hysterics. We were both laughing so hard we were crying. Those beaters stood up firm and straight. I didn't think the mix would ever let loose.

Once we regained our composure, we mixed it with the wood spoons the best that we could. It seemed like it was starting to set up so we got some into a pan and stuck it in my toaster oven.

Did I mention my regular oven decided to retire? Burners light but there's no heat in the oven. Good timing, Mr. O'Keefe & Merritt! 60 years of service and this is the week it decides to go kaput. Noooooooooo problemo. Toaster oven it is!

Once I got the first pan into the oven, I looked at the remainder of the mix VS the size pan I was working with and determined that it will take me approximately 1 week to bake all of the Hanza bread. Good thing this stuff doesn't go bad!

The first batch came out of the oven. I was eager to try it and see if it works the way they say it does. Yes, I am on a diet. Yes I like to eat and no I don't get filled up real fast the conventional way. This bread I was hoping would be my salvation.

I cut (with effort!) my first batch into the prescribed 2 x 2 inch squares. I looked at it and just knew that one of those would never fill me up. How could it? So I took 2, took my full glass of water and went and had a "snack".

*Thud* (oh yeah, lots of *thuds* with this bread...) Honestly, once I ate those two servings and drank my water - I thought I was gonna explode. I have never been so full, so fast and felt so satisfied by so little. I went to bed that evening quite full and without a "midnight snack". When I woke up this morning, I wasn't hungry as usual. I did eat another square and drank my water but only one square this time and I feel quite satisfied. I think maybe this experiment is going to pay off.

If you're going to try the Hanza bread - I would think you would want to mix only maybe half of what they say to use. I mean, that recipe they have on here will make maybe.... oh.... 100 or more squares. I really don't know but it will make a LOT. And have one with some water if you're dieting. You wont want anything else. *thud* (one more... for emphasis.. lol!)

What is your experience with this bread? I'm not diabetic but sugar really causes me to crash. This recipe doesn't seem to do that. It can't be diabetic friendly, can it?

Oops! I didn't even think about the search function. I will certainly check it out and see what people are saying.

I just put in another batch of the bread. I stirred what was in the bowl and broke my spatula. I have weak kitchen appliances it seems... And I swear the bowl I'm taking it from is not getting any more empty. Does this stuff rise or something?

Thanks for the advice! Off to search! zzzzzzooooooooooooooom

I made some of the bread, but I used the smaller recipe they had on the other discussion thread last week. The recipe I used only makes one loaf at a time.It also doesn't have all of the honey and molassas either. The bread is good tasting and very filling. I am not sure if I want to try the recipe you did or not, don't know if I am ready to wreak my kitchen over it, LOL.I do have a new stove though, wish I had one of those expensive, heavy duty mixers too!Good luck getting it all baked before it expires.

That was hilarious!

I've never tried to make it before, so I am glad to have your warning. =)

But it sounds good too! So a small square will fill you up!

Do you mind posting the recipe here? There are so many out there...

Hiya Candy, Mark and Dot (I love the Animaniacs btw, Dot!)

I used the recipe on the naturalcures.com website under "diet and supplements" http://www.naturalcures.com/Members/Lose-Weight-Diet-Supplements.aspx

I just chose the first recipe as I thought it was probably closest to the original and that it might work the best.
I was shocked at the amount of the ingredients but *shrug* figured...what do I know? lol!!

Honestly, I think its worth making. Sure it wasn't easy for me because not only are my cooking skills menial at best but my kitchen doesn't have anything in it besides the toaster oven that is under 45 years old. Most appliances of that era were meant to stand up to the test of time but they sure bowed down to this recipe.... ahahahahaaaa

Don't let my fooling around in the kitchen discourage anyone from making a batch of this. Ok, maybe a half batch. Make that 1/4 batch..... Hmmm Anyway, it's decent "bread". Actually, it doesn't really look like bread.. My older son thought I had made brownies. Boy was he surprised when he bit into one! *snort*

And it does fill me up. Oh my, yes. Satisfies my craving for sweets too. I wondered just how, as described on this website, that anyone could follow through on play A or B. To restrict their caloric intake for the entire day to 300 or 800 calories. I believe with this bread, that can be done. Then I thought "wow.. doesn't that low of a calorie diet contradict every diet rule I've ever read about "starving oneself and denying calories"? But people that have gastric bypass surgery typically ingest only 500 calories per day for quite some time and their weight comes off fast.

I'm just going to be happy, bake my bread (I think I have about 4 loaves left to do) and eat my lil 2 x 2 squares 5 times a day and see what happens. I know I certainly wont be starving and my vitamin supplements will make up for what this bread lacks. Here is how a slice pretty much breaks down into content per serving:

We have been eating the bread I made along with eating regular food too.We are grazers, LOL, so I am just kind of using the bread to replace snacks and breakfast. I am supposed to be able to eat about 1200 calories a day, so I am just trying to stay "not hungry" except for meals. It has really helped us out with that.I am also prone to bloating and the fiber in the bread has stopped all that. I am going to attempt the recipe you used, I was afraid I would waste so many ingredients if I didn't like it, I was kind of waiting around for someone else to make it first! Glad you let me know that it tasted good, I will make some later today. The recipe I was using only lasted us about a day and a half, so this one will save be from baking so much.
p.s. I have lost about 3 lbs. so I guess the pother recipe works as well.

I purchased all the stuff for the recipe except for the soya dry milk. I can't seem to find it anywhere. Know what I can use to substitute or do I need to have the exact milk??

I tried finding it at Whole Foods today, along with a herb store, and neither have had it. Have you heard yet from anyone as to where to find it?

Thanks,

Hi Savage, bless you. I too have had kitchen disasters as such. I didn' know if you saw his but I cut and pasted it for you. It is a smaller version, a non broken wooden spoon should work for this one lol. Good luck. The Hunza “No Hunger” Bread recipe:

3/4 cup (177.5 ml) of UNBLEACHED all purpose white flour OR Spelt if allergic to wheat.
1 teaspoon (4.9 ml) baking powder.
(best to use non aluminum baking powder from a health food store)
1 cup (236.6 ml) pitted whole dates, chopped. (buy already chopped – no need for
real/whole dates..)
1 cup (236.6 ml) pecans (or walnuts), chopped
3 eggs, well beaten.
1/4 cup (59.2 ml) water

WE ADD:
1 Teaspoon of Cinnamon
¼ teaspoon of Nutmeg
and sometimes add orange peels
or Cranberries … or Cranberry/Orange from Trader Joes
or dried blue berries

Place the oven on “Bake”.

Warm the oven to 350 degrees F (176.6 C).

Place flour in a bowl, add the baking powder (nutmeg and cinnamon) to the flour and mix with a whisk.

Add the 1/4 cup (59.2 ml) of water to the eggs and thoroughly whisk the egg and
the water mix, at least 2 minutes (if by hand).

Add the flour and baking powder mixture into the beaten egg and water
mixture and stir thoroughly.

Add the chopped dates and chopped pecans (etc.) to the flour, baking powder,
egg and water mixture and thoroughly stir all of the ingredients together.

Pour the mixed ingredients into a lightly greased 4x8x3 inch (101.5x203x76 mm) loaf pan.

When the oven reaches 350 degrees F (176.6 C) place the pan in the oven and bake for
35 minutes (we do it for 30 minutes since our oven cooks hotter).

Remove the pan from the oven.

Remove the Hunza Bread from pan. Let the bread cool. Slice and enjoy.

The Hunza Diet Bread loaf will be about 2 1/2 inches (63.4 mm) high and the size of the pan. Since the Hunza Bread is so easy to prepare we keep the recipe small so that it is always fresh. Be generous with each slice for the first week or two. Drink a glass of water after eating the bread. As your appetite abates you will automatically make the slices thinner.

• In the morning, we cut two ½ inch slices & toast them and add a wee bit of butter! YUM!

Below are similar ways of saying the same thing:
We like the bonus aspect grayed out below

Following is the unique and fabulous
HUNZA DIET BREAD RECIPE:
1-1/4 cup of unbleached (organic – preferred) all purpose flour.
(WE USE 3/4 cup instead of the above)
1 teaspoon baking powder.
3 eggs, well beaten.
1/4 cup water
1 cup pitted whole dates, chopped.
1 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped.
(WE add 1 teaspoon of Cinnamon and ¼ teaspoon of Nutmeg)

In a bowl add the flour and baking powder and mix with a whisk.
In a separate bowl thoroughly whisk the egg and water mixture for at least 2 minutes.

Add both wet and dry mixtures together mixing well.
Mix the chopped dates and pecans into above mixture.
Pour the ingredients into a lightly greased 4x8x3 inch loaf pan.
Bake at 350 degrees for (30 for our oven) to 35 minutes.

Bonus ingredients to experiment with: Try adding dried orange or lemon peel. (Grate it then put in a food dehydrator or low temp oven) You can also add coconut or crushed pineapple. I have fun making it a little different each week. You can experiment with different kinds of flour and nuts. I prefer the non aluminum baking powder from a health food store. Notice no sugar is added!
Cheapest source for chopped dates:

The Hunza Diet Bread loaf will be about 2 ½ inches high.
Remove the Hunza Bread from pan and let cool. Slice and enjoy.
Since the Hunza Bread is so easy to prepare we keep the recipe small so you can make it often, so that it is always fresh.

You can lose weight effectively with the
HUNZA DIET BREAD
Be generous with each slice for the first week or two. Drink a full glass of water before and after eating the bread. As your appetite abates you will automatically make the slices thinner.

Each slice of bread is only about 100 calories.

Eat 1 slice every 4 hours of the 16 hours you're awake. That's 4 slices which total 400 calories. This is the fastest way to lose weight I know of. It works faster than any high protein diet. Why? You have more energy and burn more calories. Second, the high fiber bread keeps your digestive system regular. Third, your body stays healthy. A healthy body means a properly functioning metabolic system.

Plan B: Eat a slice of HUNZA DIET BREAD 10 minutes before you eat your regular meal. When we do this we eat only a fraction, such as 1/4 of what we would normally eat. If we wait longer than 10 minutes we don't want to eat at all.

You will feel better and look better after you start eating this bread.

We hope you enjoy this delicious and healthful bread and that it helps you to achieve your objectives.
Thank you!

MISC. PLANS:

There are many ways to lose weight with HUNZA DIET BREAD. Here are some typical plans. Each slice of bread is about 100 calories.

Plan A: Eat 1 slice every 4 hours of the 16 hours you're awake.

Plan B: Really gorge yourself with the bread. Two slices every four hours for a total of 8 slices but only 800 calories. You'll feel full all day. In fact, I doubt many people could eat this much of the bread.

Plan C: For your first meal bake one or two red potatoes for sixty minutes in a 400 degree F (204.4 C) oven. Add butter or Canola margarine to your potatoes. Eat three dates and a fresh fruit. Eat two slices of your Hunza Diet Bread four hours later. At dinner you will eat a great deal less.

Plan D: Eat a slice of HUNZA DIET BREAD 10 minutes before you eat your regular meal. When we do this we eat only a fraction, such as 1/4 of what we would normally eat. If we wait longer than 10 minutes we don't want to eat at all.

Plan E: Eat the bread at the end of meals that don't fill you up enough, such as low calorie meals. This is a perfect way to use the bread. You eat a low calorie meal, enjoy it, then eat a slice or two of bread to fill you up. Perfect! No suffering and no urge to snack.

Plan F: Alternate Plan A, B, C, D. We recommend an alternation of the plans. Some of the people who just want to get the weight off as soon as possible will use Plan A exclusively.
For instance, as a housewife it's harder to diet because you have to prepare food for the family. Eat your bread exactly 2 hours before preparing a meal. That way when you prepare the meal you are in the 3rd hour where food just doesn't hold any interest. No way are you tempted to nibble or taste.

You will feel better and look better after you start eating this bread.

We hope you enjoy this delicious and healthful bread and that it helps you to achieve your objectives.

(History of the bread?)
A Bread Recipe That Taste Great and Can Help You Lose Weight!
HUNZA DIET BREAD is a bread That Miraculously Stops Your Appetite And Hunger and is based on a 2000 year old recipe said to beat all fad diets hands down. It's the fastest, and totally painless way to lose weight.
By Mary Travis,
Special feature writer
(Canfield, OH)
Is there a painless way for people to lose weight? Yes! HUNZA DIET BREAD is being hailed as the weight loss method of the century. The bread is a duplicate of a 2,000-year-old recipe used by the little known civilization of Hunza.
The Hunzas are considered to be the healthiest people on earth. Their bread is the main part of their diet. This bread is absolutely delicious. Everybody loves it. But then a startling discovery was made. Just one or two slices of this bread would suppress a person's appetite for 4 to 6 hours! Could this be a designed bread invented thousands of years ago?
There are facts being uncovered that support a theory that this bread was designed in ancient times for the express purpose of tiding people over when food supplies were scarce. Let's start with the Hunzas who are exceptionally trim, fit and the healthiest people on earth. Many consider their bread to be one of the main reasons for the extraordinary health of the Hunzas.
Here is a little background of the Hunzas from a feature story which has been published in many major newspapers throughout North America. This is an excerpt from the article:
"The Hunzas exist isolated from the rest of the world in the Himalayan Mountains where they live to be 110 to 120 years of age. They have no cancer, heart attacks or other major disorders to speak of. They are active and fit to the end of their lives. Men father children at 100 years of age and older. Overweight people are unheard of because they have the perfect weight control system."
The story then relates research and fact finding visits to Hunza by such notables as Queen Elizabeth, Art Linkletter, N.B.C., The National Geographic Magazine, Frank Shor, Lowell Thomas Jr. and Chou En Lai of China. Visitors to Hunza all came back with the same identical description of the Hunza people:
"Hunza men are straight, tall, broad-shouldered, deep-chested, slim- waisted, heavy-legged and have full heads of hair. Hunza women are straight, tall, slim-waisted, developed bosoms, perfect complexions and luxuriant hair. Both men and women have perfect teeth and eyesight even at 100 years of age and older! They are neat, clean, intelligent and friendly and you can't find an overweight person.
Hunza women at 80 look no older than North American women of 40. Fatigue is virtually unknown. Hunza men over 90 years old repeatedly walk the mountain trail of 65 miles from the town of Gilgit with a full pack and immediately start to work in the fields again!"
We feel that the Hunza bread may be "by design" both a hunger suppressant and a super health food. It is a simple, nutritious bread that is easily prepared in just 5 minutes using a few ingredients that have always been universally available and the taste is wonderful.
The Hunzas were originally soldiers of Alexander the Great. This bread may have been designed for the use of his far traveling armies. It would make sense. It's the most compact form of hunger satisfaction and nutrition we know of. According to traces of Macedonian Heritage, this bread could have originated in Egypt over 5,000 years ago. As you know, the Egyptians were capable of doing many things that modern science cannot, even today, duplicate.
We are convinced that the Hunza bread is one of the major reasons for the good health of the Hunzas.
Both my husband and I started using the bread as a weight loss device and began losing weight consistently, much faster than any weight loss method we ever tried, and, we have tried them all believe me. Exactly how does the HUNZA DIET BREAD compare to some of the fad diets such as liquid protein?
There's no comparison. Fad diets are not only ineffective, they may be downright dangerous. When I say they are ineffective I mean; that either a person will not stick with them because they are uncomfortable or when the diet is over they'll put the weight right back on. Because bread is part of our culture this diet is never over. HUNZA DIET BREAD becomes our bread substitute not only because it helps control our weight but because it is so delicious and easy to prepare.
All of us lifetime dieters know of the miseries of the high protein and liquid protein (or milkshake) diets. They seem okay for the first few days, then they become repulsive. You get "full" on these diets but not satisfied. Let me tell you about the advantages of HUNZA DIET BREAD. The biggest benefit I can think of is that the dieter just doesn't suffer AT ALL! It's such a natural and powerful appetite inhibitor. This bread is not only healthful and delicious but you will appreciate its simplicity and lack of extraneous ingredients.
This bread satisfies both appetite and hunger. And it does it with only 100 calories as effectively as most 1800 calorie full meals.
We define appetite and hunger like this: appetite is mainly the desire you get for food even when you know you're really not hungry. It's that craving in your mouth you get that's known as the cold mouth feeling. It can also be present even though you've just eaten. Your stomach may be full but you still crave something else. This is the feeling you get with a protein diet. You can stuff yourself with protein until you're ready to burst but the cold mouth craving is still there.
Hunger on the other hand is best described as those pangs of hunger you get or that empty feeling in your stomach that lets you know you really need to eat something rather than simply wanting to eat for the enjoyment of it.
After a slice or two of HUNZA DIET BREAD you eliminate both appetite and hunger. You feel satisfied and full and it lasts, depending on the person, up to 7 hours. For me it lasts 5 to 7 hours.
Not only is the bread nutritional, but it contains some proven good health producing roughage or fiber. It passes through your digestive system quickly so the actual absorbed calories are less. You also become very regular eating this bread and it tastes better than any bread that we've ever eaten.
Now, here's what its like hour by hour after you eat the bread.
Hour 1 and 2. Each minute after you finish eating the bread seems like a build-up of a "fullness" feeling. It's just as though you have kept on eating. You keep getting fuller and fuller. Both your appetite and hunger are very satisfied. You don't crave anything more.
Hour 3. In hour 3 something else happens. The thought of food just doesn't appeal to you. It's not an unpleasant experience, quite the opposite. But, you don't have a desire for food in any way, shape or form.
Hour 4. You no longer have a feeling of being stuffed or turned off by the thought of eating, but there's a kind of nothing feeling. You don't want to eat, and you don't crave anything. It's just as I said, a sort of comfortable "nothing" stage.
Hour 5 through 7. Toward the end of the 5th hour you begin to get mildly hungry which then slowly increases into the 6th and 7th hour.
All of this for only the cost of 100 to 200 calories .You can't get that performance out of an 1800 calorie meal.
You will feel better and look better after you start eating this bread. When you take a bite of the HUNZA DIET BREAD the delicious taste of the bread fills your mouth. You can tell that it is hearty, full of substance, chewy and good for you. Perhaps our bodies trigger an instinct that lets us know what's good or bad for us.

white flour? doesn't that defeat the purpose? (I thought white flour was a no-no)

I've seen ones using buckwheat flour. Could you substitute that in and still have it taste decent?
