I would like to hear stories of how you found your ND and if they have any affiliations that may help me to find my own.

What kind of certifications did you look for?
How much should I be prepared to spend?

I don't want someone who is going to require a plethora of tests for hundreds of dollars each. I understand they probably require something of the sort to find the best treatment for each individual but I'd also like someone who is respectful about working within my budget, not someone who is going to be a salesman. I'd like someone who can be a replacement for a regular MD as I don't have health insurance.

Please include your geographical locale!

Alexandra,
I tried to find out the same info 6 mos ago, on this site. After finding myself in a city area with over 2 million people living here (I thought & would get more feed back from this site, I did get 1). O.K. enough of that, sorry I was frustrated.
Any way I found someone that can help me get started---She is an herbalist & does iridology. Try this at your local whole foods store or organic gro. store. In the vitamin area there is usually someone to help you find what you are looking for in the store, ask these employes. My husband & I travel for work, 3 mos--1or 2 years in a new city. This is how I have found some great practioners.
Keep your ears open, holistic med. is on the rise.
Since Aug. 08 we have been in......Las Vegas, Nevada
Hope this helps.
Your freind Lizabeth

I first met my current ND at whole Foods. She was doing a little class. She seemed really smart, so I took her business card. Then a long time later, I was very sick, and didn't want to go to a MD, and happened to drive by a sign for a ND that was VERY close to my work! So I went and saw her for about a month. But she was very expensive. Like $200 a visit, and she really didn't help me at all. I was still sick after seeing her. Then she moved, so I had a good excuse to quit seeing her! So then I was still sick, and wanted to make sure I wasn't dying, so I went to see a MD. Well, he didn't find anything wrong with me and prescribed me some ibuprofen and cough medicine (I didn't take either one). So I finally decided to go see the ND that I have currently. She only charged $75, was willing to see me after I got off of work, she asked lots of questions so that she could get at the CAUSE of my illness! She recommended a few things to me (the most helpful was to use a neti pot - only cost me about $15). I got better and have not been sick since. That was 5 months ago. She even called to see how I was doing.

So....my advice is to:

Find a licensed ND through your local health food store. (not all states will license ND's though)
Get a 2nd or 3rd opinion if you need to.
My ND graduated from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine - so you might find someone who graduated from there.
Definitely look for someone licensed, especially if this is for a serious health problem. There are mail order ND's out there and they are just not the same as someone who has been through medical school and clinicals, etc.

I live in the Phoenix, AZ area. My naturopathic doctor's website is: www.naturopathyworks.com.
