Kris,

My father has struggled all his life to quit smoking, and my husband sturggles on a daily basis to quit, so I really do understand yur situation....

I hate ciggerettes because it's a drug, and I think yu have to realize and acknowledge that you are doing drugs. With out that thought, smoking will not seem as harmful. Remember the government is making big bucks off of smokers, that is why it is allowing sales to continue.

There is a book, I think it's written by Allan Carr- Kevin reccommends it.
My husband read it, so i'm not sure of the details.- He actually did not read it, but bought the cd's to listen to the book. He hates reading. :) But I do know the first step.....

You have to set a date on when to stop smoking and stick with it. The logic behind this is to plan ahead when you are going to stop, that way yu can have time to prepare for it, emotionally, physically.

Before you quit though, everytime yu smoke, you have to think about your actions while you are smoking....ask yourself, how is this helping me live a healthy life, am i benifiting, is this hurting me. Every puff you take, consiously think about what you are doing to yourself. This will start to train yur mind to think negatively about what you are doing to your body. Most people smoke to get relief from the problems, and don't think.......you have to think, this is bad for me, and ingest that information.....

hope this starters info helps. I'll be praying for your to stop. Its really hard, but if you believe you can quit, and train your mind to believe you can do it, then you can. You don't want to die early from lung cancer.

oh even now it just tastes bad, and my boyfriend doesnt smoke at all, quit when he was a kid. I am so conscious of how it smells and how it makes my house smell. I use fabreeze on everything when he comes over, and I NEVER smoke around him, or at his house, or in his vehicles. i dont like it already, but everytime i say i am gonna quit, i blow it . its too damn easy to go get more. i wish they were illegal!!

I am fighting this right now myself. I smoked for 25 years and quit for eight. I thought I had it whipped, but started back about 11 months ago. That was so stupid, the way to quit is never smoke the next one. I am right in the middle of this crap myself and I hate it. Just went to a new alternative DR. today and his advice is to reduce my stress level and JUST STOP IT! And I already knew this. You just have to make up your mind and STOP IT! There is no quick fix and no easy way. JUST PUT THE DAMN THINGS DOWN AND DON'T PICK UP THAT FIRST ONE! It is just that easy. ( not really) just decide that you don't want to smoke and be strong and don't do it. Keep in mind that smoking is the enemy and don't let it win. Get mad at it and put it in it's place, which is out of your life.

Ya know, I really did know this. It's just that it is so hard. I also quit a very long time ago, but the night my mother died, which is 24 yrs ago, i picked up her pack of cigarrettes and that was all it took again. and I was so proud of my self, I know I can do it because I've done it before. Somehow it just seemed much easier back then, and maybe it was since I hadnt even been smoking for 10 yrs., Now i have been smoking for over 35 yrs. it is MUCH harder now. :(

Cold Turkey-
Yes there are points where it gets really hard, but if you refuse to answer to the intense craving, the worst part of it winds down after several minutes.

I smoked for about 25 to 27 years-

The last few years I started getting bronchitis several times a year. My doctor told me that if I didn't quit, I'd be one of those people you see walking around the mall wtih oxygen tanks.

I didn't believe him because back then I used to say that doctors blame smoking for everything. It's an easy answer for something that they have no answer for.

Well, I came to a point where when I would light up, I would go into a trance imagining the smoke passing through and filling up my lungs. I felt like I was killing myself and it bothered me.
I got mad at myself and looked at the cigarette thinking, this is nuts that this little thing is controlling ME. I really, really, really wanted to rid myself of the habit, so that same day I pitched the smokes and haven't smoked a single cig in about 10 or 11 years.

I craved them yes, and there were peaks that would come several times a day that took a lot of will power to say no to, but I quickly learned that if I could just stick it out for several minutes, that peak would relax. I can kind of compare it to labor pains, not that its anywhere near the same, but if you've had kids you will know what I mean by peaking and relaxing.

It takes 10 days to completely get past the physical addiction to nicotine.
After that its all mental, which also takes will power, but I believe a real desire to be rid of the habit does help.

Whatever you do, I wish you luck. I know you can do it. I don't have to know you to know that =)

Hi Kris, Well I think both of us are in luck, and maybe many others. Since the 80's, I have been a member of the HERBAL HEALER ACADEMY. It's located in Mt. View, Arkasnsas and was hit by the recent tornados we had. It missed her building but knocked out a lot of power and buildings. She was running on generators for a while but they are back up now. Here's the deal. You can join free and when you become a member, you can email her, from 10am-1pm on Wednesdays, and ask her for a consult. She is a Dr. of Naturopathy and has been in business for 20 years. The reason I'm making this a long message is because I want you to know what the site is about first.. And you can't make any money selling this stuff. It's just a natural herb site and you can even take a Naturopathy course. To the point. I have been smoking for 50 years! She carries this product to help you stop smoking. Here's the description. "STOP SMO (Dr Chi) Herbal liquid. If this doesn't stop you smoking, nothing will. Foul smelling herbal extract. Paint a thin line on your cigarette, smoke away. Dr Chi says it's 99.3% effective withdrawal over 5-7 days. He also says it speeds up the process if you sniff it., but boy does it stink!" small bottle is $22.00. I'm willing. I don't care if it stinks, if it works, who cares???? I'm ordering it next week. Let me know if you're going to try it and will all keep track of it. The site: http://www.herbalhealer.com. The Drs' name is McCain. She also has a lot of other info. It's very interesting.Besides, where else can you get a free consult??

That sounds very interesting, hope it works for you. I have spent so much money on patches and gum and then of course the packs of cigs when I break down and go get a pack. I am going to just try to use the patches I have left and then go cold turkey.I do know that when I quit before I had to get all of my stress under control first. Seems like the addiction just waits for a weak moment then pounces! It really is affecting my health very bad and I keep telling myself that I am wasting my time trying to eat right and become more healthy naturally if I am going to smoke. Stupid, isn't it???
