Children having a hard time focusing!

I am just waiting for them to label my 6 year old daughter - she is a great child - she has a lot of energy - but I do not feel that she is ADHD but I am just waiting for them to label her -
She made the school cutoff by 2 days so she is the youngest in her 1st grade class and I could just kick myself for not holding her back - Even though her kindergarten teacher passed her on ready - It wasn't until she was having a hard time sitting and getting her work done in class that she started getting in trouble. Not bad - just talking, and not paying full attention. I feel alot of it is from not being mature enough yet for 1st grade. Going from learning in fun centers having a great time last year - to sitting in your seat and not getting up to have fun until you are finished - The problem is that the school system anymore - will pass a child through - passing them just enough so that they do not have record of holding a child back a year.
If any one has any insight - please share - I have switched to making healthy breakfasts and in search for a childrens yoga class - she loves it when we vist my mom - they do children's yoga from a DVD.
Thank you - and God Bless

My son from when he was in kindergarten did okay but was a little behind and had trouble pronouncing certain words. In first grade he was put in a speech class and a reading class, because he was behind in reading. In second grade the teacher insisted that he was ADHD and needed to be put on medication. We told he to be stricter with him, because she was a very easy going teacher and see if that would help before we would have him tested as she wanted. She was amazed and apologized for mentioning ADHD because it worked. We continued to work with him in reading and by the time he was entering the 4th grade he was only 6 months behind in reading. We put him in Sylvan Learning Center for the summer. In the 4th grade he fell even further behind because of a problem with his teacher not being capable of teaching him English (we had swithched schools and the school he came from was not as advanced in English as the school we moved to) His teachers advice was that "not to worry she won't let him fail, she will just give him something to do to get him through" I met with administration and had to literally teach him English myself that year, which made his reading suffer all the more. We'll this school was horrible for him....the teachers, because of his reading would allow him to take a test then retake the exact same test if he failed it. Which when you allow a child to do this.....at least for my son, he no longer pushes to try hard but relies on failing, retesting, memorizing answers and getting passed through. We put him in Learning RX for the summer. We thought of homeschooling but wanted the social aspect of it.......we transfered him to our Church's school because of my son's interest in it. Well, this school is very difficult for him. You fail a test....too bad, work harder next time. They are more advanced than public schools, so it has been a little difficult. However, he was getting by. We notice that all through school he has not been a problem as far as ADHD (with the hyperness) but as far as concentrating (ADD) we felt their may be a problem. My husband wanted me to check into Adderol. Once I did, there was absolutely no way. (I have a whole other story and opinion on this!) I then began to research alternative methods. One website (and I'm sorry I can't find it now) talked about if a child has ADD that it is because of an Omega3 difficiency in the body. We began about 3 weeks ago putting him on Organic Barlean's Flax Oil (1 tablespoon daily) plus I also give him some organic milled flax seed in a smoothie every morning. We have seen tremendous results. He is focusing so much better, wanting to do his work more on his own. He is memorizing, comprehending, and critically thinking better. He has completely read 3 books within two weeks all by himself, and passed them with 100%. Anyway, sorry for the long story but you might try that. I think the public school system is really a joke for any child that may have a problem in any area. Your right they get passed through the system....or if they give them any help they are labeled a certain way. Most of the time, they are WAY to quick to want to label a child ADD or ADHD and put on medication just so they don't have to deal with them. I have seen children on the medications for this stuff and they are horrible almost like zombies. As far as homeschooling, I commend you if you do.....however I would suggest that only do it if your really dedicated and can consistantly set a schedule, have the materials, and follow through with completing it. I know kids that have GREATLY benefited from this. However, I know kids that have had not so dedicated mothers and have fallen DRASTICALLY behind because of not following a routine. Sorry this was so long......hope it helps.

Thank you so very much for sharing - I have heard about the Omega 3 -
I am going to do that for sure -
I really feel like I know you and I am so thankful that you took the time to tell me about your son - I will be praying for all of our children - God has made them who they are and have made them special - but it is us as parents (whom He gave us these gifts and a brain to use to raise them) everyone has a purpose in life - just as God had crossed our paths to help each other - Thank you again - Please keep in touch -

Your welcome! You are so right God has given us these "blessings". I'm just glad that you realize that and are taking your job seriously. There are so many parents that just turn their children over to the school system just because some teacher mentions something, but we as "Godly" parents should know our children better than they do. Trust God and follow after Peace!!

Do not let them label your daughter ADD if she is not. My daughter is ADD. Keep away from any food with red dye. She seems that she would do better with a teacher that can teach her in a teaching style that you daughter can bloosom in.
There are other foods that you should stay from. I can't remember them. I will research and get back to you. Please do not put your child on any medicines

I held my 3 children back and would send then to different schools until they were 7. It was good for them. They could cope better, sit still easily.. turned out that my oldest had learning disabilities any way and was in special ed until she finished High School. My 2 sons are the smart ones. Having the children go to other schools they don't feel that they have been held back and they get a different outlook because of the change in teachers and children.
PS I send them to a combination of public and private schools.

I need your opinions on something! We had someone refer us to a program called Babynet! What they do is come out to your home and evaluate your child to see if there are any delays. I should not have had them come out....but I guess part of me was concerned about my sons speech. Well....the lady came out yesterday and she said that he was doing great developmentally but she thought he might be slightly delayed with his speech. If he is elligible...they will have a speech therapists come out once a week to work with him with NO charge to us. What would you all do? It was free for them to come out here so I just did it for peace of mind but im wandering maybe if I should avoid getting to involved in this....cause you never know what they are up to. She said it would be good to work with his speech now and spare him the embarressment of having to do so in school! That depends on if I homeschool or not though! I still might be doing that!

She also stated that he had excellent cognitive skills and GREAT patience for his age! he's two years old...so im thinking maybe I should not be expecting too much with his speech yet. He is trying to talk and even making alot of sentences now.....so I guess I should not worry so much! Right?

ezmee,

Im not too worried but I feel if there is a problem then I would rather work on it before he goes to school to spare him the torture. They are gonna evaluate his case and see if he is elligible! Im just not sure if I want to do this though. Sounds like your kids made out pretty good....so my boy should be ok!

Both of my kids had speech delays at younger ages too. My daughter was 2 when she was evaluated and I enrolled her into HeadStart school at 3 and 4 years old for half days all week. She picked pretty much up after first year. With my deafness and my husband's lack of encouragement, I had church help volunteer with her summer reading program last summer. She really loved to read with teens 3 times a week. Now she graduated from reading the first grade level this year.
As for my son, he spoke almost nothing at 2 years old, I had him evaluated. They said his developments are great, but had speech delays that needs to be worked on. I started going to church a month before he was evaluated, they wanted to re-evaluate him in 6 months. But amazing, he changed drastically from mute to a chatter boy. His Sunday school teacher was impressed by him all times by how much he has improved since he started going to Sunday school. She always share with me how he was doing. So he talks a lot more than my daughter at her age, so I don't think I need to send him off to HEadStart school. :)

Also sometimes I wonder if she was acting differently because both of her parents are deaf and hard of hearing? Maybe, or maybe not. Only one thing that makes her stand out is she was always a loud child, talks so very loud, screams loud, sang very loud but beautifully. I don't know. Ha

What about my question earlier (2 pages behind) about children diet? Does it matter or what? So I have her stay away from red dye, no problem. What about fruit snacks and fruit rolls? She loves those, and Trix yogurts, none red of course but pink and other flavors. Hmmmm Think that's about it. She usually drinks kool-aid over summer but I will refrain her from drinking that from now on. What about other kool-aid flavors such as grapes and oranges?

Renee,

My son too has improved since starting the sunday school program in church...being around all those kids his age! I think the more he is around other kids the better. That's what the therapists said anyways! What they will do is come to our home weekly....so no going anywhere, etc. In the comfort of our own home that is IF I decided I want to do this.

Abour your question.....I would keep her away from ALL preservatives, additives, MSG,etc. They have a wide selection of snacks, organic and some just natural with BETTEr ingredients in them. I would definately NOT do trix, fruit rolls because they have CORN SYRUP! Stay away from corn syrup.Buy her fresh fruit and organic juices.....much better than cool aid! cool aid is poison!

When I was in elementary school I was behind in speach and reading.
I went to an afterschool program to get caught up.
Later in highschool I always scored high in reading skills.
I think I turned out pretty good.
After all im running this community lol
If I was in elementary school now, I would probably be diagnosed with some crazy thing.
Put on medications and never would have been creative enough to be in the position im in now.
I am really scared to see what all these kids on meds will be like at 30
