Chiropracter - ARe you supposed to be in pain? and for how long when you go for a visit?

Hi All..

For those of you have gone to a chiropracter or are a chiropracter..

I have been going to a guy in northern jersey......due to help get rid of my upper neck and back pain.....while i was going to him, my back pain dissapeared.......and i never felt like he was being rough with me while he was doing his technique....

However, I had to switch chiro 's due to me movinig. I am seeing someone now in Southern Jersey, and I notice that when I leave, my back pain does not go away, and seems to worsen....not only that, but when this chiropracter jerks my neck, he has to try 3 or 4 times, because he does not crack it on the first try, and while he tries again for the 2nd or 3rd time, I feel he is pulling on my neck, which makes me feel like he's being a little rough.....

I really would appreicate any input. Is this new guy i'm going to any good, based on what i'm writing and should i get out as soon as possible, or what he is doing sound right?

thanks

I have been to numerous chiropractors and I have found that they all use different techniques. Certain techniques work for some people and not for others. Many chiropractors are trained in a few different types. Ask your chiro what method he uses and see if he can use a different method on you. I had the same problem when I moved from Texas to PA. I had the perfect chiropractor in TX and he was always able to give me good adjustments, he was very gentle. It never hurt. I have not been able to find anyone as good as he was.
I started working for a chiropractor a few years ago and I also started having him give me adjustments for migraines. It always hurt, he could never get me to "crack" anywhere and I was always very sore for days afterward. After awhile I just stopped having adjustments because it wasn't helping at all....I usually felt worse. I don't work for him anymore and I would never consider going back to him.
I would suggest if you are not getting any results from the chiro you are seeing and it hurts then you should try a different one. Ask around and get a recommendation from family or friends that are very satisfied with their chiropractors. Sometimes it's just the chiropractor and how he handles his patients.

I would find a new one. I was never sore from mine. she did nothing but help me. She used a little machine that just clicked the bones in place. I will find out the name of it.

Kimberly, Ok the thing my chiro uses is called an ACTIVATOR. Call around and see if you can find one that uses it. There is no crazy cracking and pulling, Just a couple of clicks and I tell ya it works. It took several visits but I was bent over and couldnt stand up straignt and when she was done I was a new woman. That was several years ago and I have been fine. My back used to do that sveral times a year. Not any more. Good luck, and find a new one. That sounds kinda scary.

Christine, thank you, I never heard of the activator......Yeah, I definitly have to look for another chiro, because my back has been in pain for the past 3 days....I even went to him today, and the pain is still there......

anyhoo, thanks for the info, I will look into the activator.

I work for a chiropractor and they are great. What you described; however, is nothing like what we do. Typically manual adjustments are mild; however, you will run into those chiropractors who basically feel the rack em crack em technique is appropriate. If this guy is attempting to adjust you and it takes 3 or 4 trys to "crack it" I would seek another chiropractor. The area they are trying to adjust will not always have that "crack it" result, because if there is significant swelling in the area of discomfort, it may prevent the chiropractor from being able to "crack it." It may take a few visits and time to get the swelling to go down before you get the "crack it" to occur. They are still benefitting you by aligning the spine via mild manipulation. If your pain continues, I would like to suggest that while getting regular adjustments, you ice the area down 20 min on 40 min off with a gel ice pack to help with reducing the swelling. Never apply heat to the affected area as this causes an increase in swelling and more pain. I hope this helps you a little. My experience with chiropractors has always been quite successful just keep in mind though that there is never a quick cure for anything, it didn't take just a day for you develop the discomfort you are in now, healing it won't happen in just one visit. Your body heals when it's ready to; chiropractic is a way to speed up that process without the harmful effects from drugs or unnecessary surgeries.

I would find another one. You should always leave better off, then when you started. On the rare occassion that you do not, you should return to the chiropractor. However, since this new guys standard operating procedure is to leave you in pain, if it were me I would move on.

thanks all....I don't have any pain in my upper back today......

NMiller, great advice, I will put some ice on the shoulder and see how that goes....

My concern was that the first chiro i was going to, I felt no pain after the adjustment, but when i went to the second guy, after the adjustments my back pain would persist through out the day...
so that was why I was wondering why with the second guy my pain was coming back.....

However, I am in no pain today, so i guess that is a good sign. What sucks about this whole thing is that i see this guy in church....lol, how awkward would it be to leave him? and see him every sunday. LOL, I tell you the things i get myself into!!!

Find a new Chiropracter. It should not hurt!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of Chiropracter's will accept insurance. But it depends on the insurance - do they cover Chiropractic treatment. You need to call both to find out.
