Depressed 16 year old daughter

Does anyone have any suggestions for what alternative medicine or theraphy I should persue for my teenage daughter who is suffering from depression. She is on anti depressents and seeing a therapist. She does not like the side effects, weight gain, lack of energy, headaches, upset stomach. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

The people that I have seen on this kind of medicine (and knew before they took it), makes me wonder if the medicine is making them worse.

I personally believe that Scientology is a cult; however, I have read some of their material on this subject and agree with them on that topic.
I totally disagree with ALL the medications that
are used for depression. But, I would not tell someone to just stop - I would get them to someone that believes in natural medicine (hopefully a practicing Christian) and
have them guide (and pray) them off the drugs. We need to learn to JUST SAY NO TO the DRUG PUSHERS (controlled by the pharmaceutical companies most of the time...).

Being a born again Christian I personally believe in "deliverance" - and that people that
are overwhelmed by depression (oppression) is
spiritual (Ephesians chapter 6). But, I also believe that Satan is not blamed for everything,
(we need to pray for discernment) and sometimes quilt or too much sugar are things that trigger mild or normal anxiety. Accepting
God's forgiveness (after repentance) can get rid of guilt and set
people free - and changing a diet can help too - by stopping drinking soda (anything with caffeine and artificial sweeteners like aspartate or other types, in my opinion), eating more fruits and vegies, etc.,

Lemon Balm is known for it anti-depressant activity. It is highly recommended for treatment of mental ailment like depression. you can also see other remedies at Mamaherb. But more than anything else she needs to be strong from inside. The more she is busy in work and living a healthy and enjoyable life, the more she would be able to cope up with all her problems.
I know you love her a lot. And love can heal every thing in this world. I would say your love is the best treatment for her.
Take care and live healthy.

I "cured" myself of depression and anxiety. A teen has "growing up" issues to deal with as well but best to learn now and have a lifetime of happiness than to struggle for years. See my blog on how I did this. There is the environmental part of depression, which is sadness and stress and job and money problems {and the angst of teenage years}. Then there is the "chemical imbalance" side and I believe depression is a two fold problem. You have to deal with the chemical imbalance by virtually eliminating sugar and processed foods (no caffeine, no artifical sweeteners either). Eat whole foods, lots of veggies, and only grains that are whole with high fiber. Take fish oil!!! I ate so poorly as a teenager it's no wonder looking back why I struggled so much. Then she has to learn "coping skills" and journaling will help find out what environmental triggers she has. There are many ways to deal with that, journaling, self help books, guidance from a family priest or counselor or other trusted adult. Sometimes it takes someone outside the parent or immediate family to help someone see another way. At times I suffered badly, crying spells for no reason, uncontrollable thoughts, and impending gloom and doom. I worry about anyone taking these strong meds ESPECIALLY a child/teen whose bodies and minds have not even fully developed yet and in the midst of hormonal surges and other chemical growth and changes. The fact that you are aware of her situation will help. 25 years ago when I was going through it no one understood what was happening. You have resources and options. Good luck. It will also help, the more activities that you get involved in the better. You have to keep the mind occupied, not idle. Take up dance classes, scrapbooking, anything to be out meeting people and doing things of interest that you can carry on and continue at home during down time.

have you ever done any research on food dyes? They are very reactant in certain people and make there personalities change. Red dye 20 seems to be the worst but blue is also been known to cause problems. People do not realize how much red dye is put into things we eat(meat, fish, and so many others)!! Just a thought to have you look into.

Good point heather. All food additives are bad. Diet change is SO SO SO important!

I have a 16 year old daughter who I'm having an incredibly hard time with right now. I don't know what to do with her as she is very persistent, will not take no for an answer. I am so fed up now that I feel like going into a depression myself. Do you have family or someone who would take her in for a bit? Maybe she just needs a change of atmosphere. We just sent our 16 year old to Grandpa & Grandmas for a white. How long? We are not sure.

Geranium, sandalwood and lavender are good essential oils used to treat depression. You can use them with a carrier oil such as almond, olive, sesame, etc. for a skin ointment or aromatherapy difuser. I would strongly suggest she stop using cell phones. The frequency they operate at is too close to that of microwaves and produce harmful EMF.

From what i see, obviously the medicine is not helping her and her therapist isnt really helping but collecting money. I got this from Kevin Trudeau's book, these things matter in everyday life actually help depression. If u want to look for it urself there our 2 Issues, one is Natural Cures Revealed,
Get some Sun, - at least one hour, take a nice walk, get her out of the house. Take her somewhere fun and use ur own knowledge to help her forget about depression. it helps reduces stress, She has to be able to work with u tho. I know a couple people that have used antidepressants and everyone that used them just got worse and more sick. Medicine is not supposed to give u side effects. Good advice is getting rid of the anidepressants and ur therapist.

heres some sites that are really helpful,
Dr. Coldwell's stress-reducing techniques
www.20minutestolesstress.com (888) 827-7720

Dahn Yoga
www.dahnyoga.com (877) 477-9642
These are sites i got from Kevin trudeaus book that might help you. They could be really helpful.
